I first met Ethan Strimling in 1989 at the University of Maine when he was a student in my Western Civilization class. Aside from his responsibilities as a student, Ethan was active in student government, theater, campus radio and the Maine Peace Action Committee.

On campus radio, Ethan devoted one of his programs to Charlie Howard, a Bangor-area gay man who was murdered by local teenagers.

We eventually became friends, and I was invited to his and his friends’ poker game. Over the years I’ve noticed with great interest and satisfaction his continuing commitment to helping people through his leadership of LearningWorks.

I’ve lived in Portland off and on since 1992 and although I currently live in Biddeford, I can’t think of anyone better suited to be your next mayor. His devotion to social justice is the hallmark of his life and career – and he’s a helluva poker player.
