The Greater Portland Board of Realtors and Maine Commercial Association of Realtors oppose Question 2 on Portland’s Nov. 3 ballot, and urge voters to vote “no” on this restrictive referendum, which could have dire impacts on our citizens’ rights to enjoy or improve their properties.
We made the decision to oppose the referendum based on our commitment to support thoughtful development in Portland and to support homeownership rights.
Question 2, as written, would create unfair hurdles for the creation of new and affordable housing in Portland, and has the potential to hurt local businesses and our economy by making it more difficult to create jobs.
If passed, Question 2 could also stop the preservation of an important piece of Portland’s historic working waterfront.
For these reasons, we oppose Question 2 and strongly urge city residents to vote “No on Question 2” on Nov. 3.
