Ilyas Abdi, Willy Burdick and Abel Alemayo scored during the third round of penalty kicks, and second-seeded Waynflete (12-2-1) completed a 1-0 win Thursday over seventh-seeded Carrabec (9-6-1) in a Class C South boys’ soccer quarterfinal.
Waynflete was originally declared the winner Tuesday after Jack Weston’s successful kick to begin the third round of the tiebreaker was followed by a Carrabec miss. But the teams learned Wednesday that they were supposed to complete another full round of five kicks rather than play sudden death, so the Maine Principals’ Association mandated that the tiebreaker had to be continued.
Waynflete keeper Milo Belleau stopped six of 14 attempts during the shootout – including one save on three tries Thursday – after making four saves through regulation and overtime.
The Flyers (12-2-1) will host a regional semifinal at 10:30 a.m. Saturday against sixth-seeded Sacopee Valley (8-6-1).
