FALMOUTH — Top-seeded Falmouth dominated fifth-seeded Westbrook on both sides of the ball to cruise to a 32-0 victory in a Class B South football semifinal Friday night.

The Yachtsmen (9-1) will make their first appearance in a regional football final when they take on second-seeded Marshwood (8-2) at home next weekend.

Falmouth used a no-huddle offense to build a 24-0 halftime lead, then relied on its hard-hitting defense to keep the Blue Blazes scoreless.

“We’ve been working on (the no-huddle) and we used it for the first time last week against Morse (in a 57-13 victory),” Falmouth Coach John Fitzsimmons said. “It puts pressure on teams.”

Jack Bryant completed 11 of 14 passes while directing three long scoring drives in the first half.

“He’s a sophomore but he doesn’t play like a sophomore,” Fitzsimmons said. “He’s playing at the junior-senior level already. (The offense is) complicated, but he can read not only the first option, but the second and third. He’s just a skilled quarterback.”

Falmouth scored on its first three possessions.

Less than five minutes into the game, Bryant threw a 26-yard scoring pass to Brock Welch on fourth down to complete a 10-play, 62-yard drive following the opening kickoff. Bryant then completed the first of four 2-point conversion passes.

Less than three minutes into the second quarter, Coleman Allen went up the middle 2 yards to cap a 16-play, 96-yard drive that took nearly seven minutes.

In one stretch, Bryant connected on five consecutive passes.

Less than two minutes later, Connor Aube ran 73 yards for a touchdown on the first play following a Westbrook fumble.

Aube rushed for 137 yards on 14 carries to go over 1,000 yards for the season.

After being limited to two first downs and 29 yards in the first half, Westbrook (6-4) tried to get back into the game in the second half, but the Blue Blazes lost a fumble at the Falmouth 1 on their first possession.

“Credit the Falmouth defense,” Westbrook Coach Jeff Guerette said. “They made the big plays when they had to. They have some good athletes and they’re physical, and they made some crucial big plays.”

The Yachtsmen forced four turnovers and sacked quarterback Bailey Sawyer five times.

“Our defense stepped up big time,” Fitzsimmons said. “(Westbrook) is a well-coached team that does a lot of variations.”

Sawyer completed 11 of 14 passes for 125 yards in the second half.

With three minutes left, Aube swept right 17 yards for a touchdown to cap a seven-play, 73-yard drive after the Blazes lost the ball on downs.

“Westbrook is a good program, and we knew after their (39-13) win in Biddeford they would come in here with a lot of confidence,” Fitzsimmons said. “We had a good practice week and I’m very proud of how the boys stepped up.”
