Meranda Martin scored 15 minutes into the second half, and Richmond earned its fourth girls’ soccer state championship in six years with a 1-0 win Saturday over Ashland in the Class D final in Presque Isle.

The game was a rematch of last year’s state final, which Ashland won in overtime, 2-1. Richmond was playing in its sixth consecutive state final and won three in a row from 2010-12.

It’s the 10th title in 27 seasons for Richmond Coach Troy Kendrick, who said his team made some halftime adjustments.

“We talked about trying to keep the ball,” said Kendrick. “We wanted a little more possession, we kind of were chasing the ball a little too much, wanted to keep it on the grass and try to attack out wide. We got some really nice play from my flank players and some kids just stepped to the front for us.”

OAK HILL 13, WINTHROP/MONMOUTH 10: Dalton Therrien connected with Connor Nilsson for a 34-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter, lifting the top-seeded Raiders (9-0) to a comeback win against the fourth-seeded Ramblers (5-4) in a Class D South semifinal at Wales.

Oak Hill trailed in the second half for the first time this season after Alec Brown’s 3-yard touchdown run gave Winthrop/Monmouth a 10-6 lead in the third quarter.

Brown’s touchdown came moments after the Ramblers recorded their second safety of the afternoon, on an intentional grounding call against Therrien as he tried to avoid a sack in the end zone.

“(It was) scary. We’re not used to it,” Therrien said of the second-half deficit. “This game is going to help us move on for the next game, and hopefully (the) game after that.”

Winthrop/Monmouth drove deep into Oak Hill territory twice in the fourth quarter. Matthew Strout stopped the first threat by ripping the ball out of the hands of Dustin Tripp, and the Raiders held on downs at the 19 with less than two minutes remaining.

WINSLOW 21, MDI 0: The second-seeded Black Raiders (9-0) overcame five turnovers and posted their fifth straight shutout, holding No. 3 MDI (7-3) to 131 yards in a Class C North semifinal at Winslow.

Nate St. Amand rushed for 160 yards, including a 50-yard gain that set up Kenny Rickard’s 18-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Jake Trask threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Nate Gagnon early in the second quarter, and Rickard scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth.

Winslow will play for the regional title Friday night at top-seeded Old Town (9-0).

“That was a real nice defensive effort,” Winslow Coach Mike Siviski said. “We’re kind of disgusted with not taking care of the ball. That amount of turnovers is what we’ve had all year, and that’s one game. If we don’t take care of the ball, Old Town will teach us a lesson.”
