A York County man was arrested Wednesday and charged with abusing his 18-month-old nephew.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call Friday from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services about suspected child abuse after the boy was admitted to a hospital with what police described as “significant head trauma and internal injuries.”

The boy was in the care of his uncle, Barren Foster Tracey, 33, at the time he was injured, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

The child received treatment for three days at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He has since been placed with foster parents, police said.

On Wednesday, Tracey was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault, a felony that carries a sentence of as much as 10 years in prison. He was held Wednesday in the York County Jail on $25,000 bail and is scheduled to appear via video for his arraignment on Friday.

Tracey has no permanent address but lived previously at an apartment complex in Parsonsfield, according to the sheriff’s office.
