STANDISH — Alex Hart scored 21 points to lead Thornton Academy to a 35-32 victory against Bonny Eagle in an SMAA schoolgirl basketball opener Friday night.

Friday was the opening night of high school basketball throughout Maine.

Thornton managed six field goals but converted 22 free throws. Hart sank eight of Thornton’s 10 fourth-period free throws.

Hart hit 12 free throws and Ashley Howe added 11 points for the Trojans, including nine from the line. Mackenzie Emery and Jennifer Turner scored nine points each for Bonny Eagle.

MORSE 36, BRUNSWICK 30: Signe Ostergaard sank four free throws in overtime as the Shipbuilders converted all five overtime attempts to pull away at Bath.

Isabelle Paulus forced overtime for Morse, scoring the tying basket with three seconds left.

Ostergaard finished with 10 points and Paulus with 10 rebounds. Sabrina Armstrong led the Dragons with 10 points.

DEERING 65, PORTLAND 47: Tasia Titherington scored 30 points for Deering, which opened with an 18-1 run and won at home.

Titherington hit three 3-pointers and Delaney Haines added two in the quick start.

Amanda Brett finished with a team-leading eight rebounds and six points for the Rams.

GORHAM 61, WESTBROOK 36: Emily Esposito scored a game-high 24 points for the Rams at Gorham.

Mackenzie Holmes added 18 points and 11 boards for Gorham.

Alisha Aube led Westbrook with 22 points, including 12 from the free-throw line.

WINDHAM 52, SANFORD 41: Sadie Nelson had 16 points and five steals, and May Manette added 10 points for Windham at home.

Summer Camire led the Spartans with 13 points. Jeanette Jones added 10.

KENNEBUNK 41, FALMOUTH 30: Gabby Fogg scored 19 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, as the Rams won at Falmouth.

Adelaide Cooke led Falmouth with 10 points.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 59, NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 29: Brianna LaPlante had 16 points and six assists, and Peyton Feitz recorded a double-double to lead the Seagulls at Old Orchard Beach.

Feitz finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Samantha Donnell hit four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points for the Seagulls.

Margaret Larson scored 14 points to lead the Panthers. Lindsay Tufts added nine.

LEAVITT 51, MT. ARARAT 35: The Hornets held Mt. Ararat to 16 second-half points at Topsham.

Sophia Gilbert scored a game-high 13 points for Leavitt. Allie Belaire was 3 for 3 from behind the arc for nine points.

Nikki Bradstreet and Sara Lamb each had 10 points for Mt. Ararat.

CHEVERUS 70, NOBLE 16: Brooke Dawson scored 15 points as the Stags cruised at Portland.

Emme Poulin had 12 points, including three baskets from behind the arc, and Abby Cavallaro added 10 points for Cheverus.

Kayla Lessard led Noble with five points.

YORK 48, TRAIP ACADEMY 29: The Wildcats used a balance offense to win at Kittery.

Mia Briggs and Chloe Smedley each scored nine points, and Madigan Cogger and Alexandra Lawlor each chipped in with six.

Cassidy Delano had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Traip.

WELLS 36, LAKE REGION 26: Halee Ramsdell scored 14 points and Natalie Thurber added 11 to help the Warriors at Wells.

Wells went 10 of 12 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Spencer True and Kristen Huntress scored 10 points apiece for Lake Region.

MARSHWOOD 51, BIDDEFORD 29: Gabrielle Bazemore scored 14 points to lead a balanced offense as the Hawks triumphed at Biddeford.

Emily Robida and Kathleen Locke added eight points apiece for Marshwood.

Brittany Roy led Biddeford with 14 points.

POLAND 55, FREEPORT 45: Sarah Bolduc hit a 3-pointer with two minutes remaining to start an 8-0 run for the Knights at Poland.

Poland had a 21-10 lead at the end of the first quarter before Freeport chipped away through the second and third quarters, pulling within 41-39 through the third.

Nathalie Theriault had a triple-double for Poland, with 20 points, 12 boards and 10 assists. Morgan Brousseau added seven points and 11 rebounds.

Megan Cormier was the top scorer with 16 points. Kayla Belanger tossed in 15 points, including 6 of 9 from the free-throw line.
