Re: “Another View: Navy’s Maine-built, $4 billion experiment is finally afloat” (Dec. 12):

I served as a petty officer on a 302-foot destroyer escort and take great issue with the Bloomberg View editorial that you published on the new Zumwalt! This 600-foot, sleek, fast, safe and innovative warship has half the complement of my old vessel and is far less vulnerable. Zumwalt attains three times the speed and has vastly superior missiles and firepower.

It is hard to balance extreme safety and firepower, protecting our fleet aircraft carriers and ultimately our worldwide shores.

Gigantic design change is always risky, but greater minds must be at work safeguarding our future!
