CASTINE — Students aboard Maine Maritime Academy’s training ship have left a wreath near the spot where the container ship El Faro sank.

The 500-foot State of Maine departed Castine last weekend and arrived Thursday in waters where El Faro was lost during Hurricane Joaquin. El Faro’s captain and four other Maine Maritime graduates were among the 33 crew members who perished during the storm on Oct. 1.

The wreath was lowered into the water by cadets after a poem was read. As the wreath floated free, a long blast of the State of Maine’s whistle signaled farewell.

The ship’s flag was at half-mast and signal flags represented the last names of the Maine Maritime graduates. President William Brennan called the ceremony “somber yet cathartic.”
