Rescue workers responded to a head-on crash on Route 236 Tuesday morning.

A Ford Fusion was turning left from Academy Street onto Route 236 when it collided with a Dodge Caliber at 7:24 a.m., police said.

The driver of each car, the only occupants, were taken to a local hospital for treatment but the injuries did not appear to be serious, said South Berwick police Officer Jerry Libritz.

Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts, which prevented more serious injury, he said.

Route 236 was closed for an hour during the morning commute while police investigated the crash and the damaged vehicles were removed.
