State Sen. Amy Volk, R-Scarborough, is seeking re-election to the District 30 seat, which serves the communities of Buxton, Gorham and Scarborough.

Volk was first elected to the Senate in 2014 following two terms in the Maine House of Representatives.

“It is a great honor to serve my friends and neighbors in the state Legislature,” Volk said in a press release. “I look forward to working hard for them during the current 2016 session.”

Then this summer and fall, she said, “My family and I look forward to another great campaign season, which I hope to keep focused on the issues that impact our communities.”

Since her election to the Senate, Volk has successfully worked to pass a number of bills that positively impact District 30 and the state, according to the press release.

She has also earned a strong reputation as a collaborator, finding common ground with a diverse group of stakeholders, the press release added.

During her time in Augusta, Volk has served on the Legislature’s Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee, which she is currently heading. Volk also serves as a member of the Judiciary Committee.

Volk and her husband, Derek, have raised four children in Scarborough, all of whom attended Scarborough public schools.

Last month Scarborough Town Councilor Jean-Marie Caterina, a Democrat, announced that she would also be seeking the District 30 seat.

At the time, Caterina said, “Augusta politicians have forgotten how life should be in Maine. I am running because I am tired of politicians in Augusta not understanding how their actions negatively impact the rest of us hard-working Mainers in this district.”

Caterina is in her first, three-year term on the council and in 2012 ran for the Maine House of Representatives against Republican state Rep. Heather Sirocki.

Caterina is a real estate broker, but has also worked as a teacher, social worker, personnel administrator and marketing professional.
