From the Journal Tribune: “Though you couldn’t get a hamburger, everything else at McDonalds on Route 1 was up for sale Wednesday morning, including the kitchen sink. Buyers began registering at 9 a.m. for a demolition auction hosted by Haza Auctioneers Appraisers and Real Estate Brokers. The building, which is 34 years old, is slated for demolition on Monday. Owners John and Anne Maragus hope to have a more modern eatery constructed by July 4.”

50 years ago

From the Biddeford-Saco Journal: “Three persons were killed and a fourth seriously injured in a head-on crash last night on Route 1 here, near the Kennebunk town line. Pronounced dead at the Webber Hospital, Biddeford where they were taken by ambulance following the crash, were Mrs. Pauline Arsenault, 51, of Arundel; her daughter, Sheila, 12; and Robert V. Derosiers, 18, of Ocean Park Road, Saco. Listed in serious condition, at the Maine Medical Center, Portland, is Richard Walton, about 23, of May Street Biddeford, a passenger in the Derosiers’ vehicle.”

100 years ago

From the Biddeford Daily Journal: “The walking fever has struck Biddeford and there is talk of organizing parties to take long hikes over the road. Those who informed the Journal of the attempt to boom the pleasure and healthy walking game locally are greatly interested in the sport, and ever since municipal walking parties were organized in Portland, they have been following the accounts of the same in the paper.”
