The Durham Town Office hours are Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 8: 30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; closed Wednesday; and Thursday, 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. For more information, call 353-2561.

Meetings

The Durham Board of Selectmen will meet Tuesday, March 8, and Tuesday, March 22, at 6:30 p.m., in the town office.

A public hearing on a proposal to study withdrawal from Regional School Unit 5 will be held Tuesday, March 15, at 7 p.m., in the Durham Community School.

Dog licenses

available

Residents are urged to license their dogs at the Durham Town Office. Dogs must have a current rabies shot. Though there is an additional $25 late fee per registration, residents are reminded that a rabid raccoon was found recently.

Kindergarten

registration starts

Kindergarten pre-registration has begun for the 2016-2017 school year. Please go to our homepage to pre-register your child for kindergarten. Children must be 5 years old on or before Oct. 15, 2016.

Raffle to aid effort

to fix church roof

Tickets for a quilt and pillow sham raffle are being sold to benefit the Shingle Fund of the Durham Congregational Church, to re-shingle the church roof.

Community Lunch

coming March 1

Community Lunch at the First Congregational Church of Durham, 773 Royalsborough Road, will be served Tuesday, March 1. Doors open at 11:30 and the meal is served at noon. On the menu is shepherd’s pie, and as always, there will be homemade desserts. The suggested donation for lunch is $2-$4, and all proceeds fund future lunches. The general schedule is the first and third Tuesday of the month.

For those interested, the book club meets on the first Tuesday of the month. The book for discussion is “Gone Girl,” a novel written by Jillian Flyn.

The church, located at the intersection of routes 9 and 136, is handicapped accessible. Those interested in helping or who have questions can call Julie Wagoner at 353-9715.

Absentee ballots

ready March 1

Absentee ballots for Durham’s municipal election will be available Tuesday, March 1. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is Monday, March 28.

Durham’s election is Friday, March 1. The annual town meeting is Saturday, April 2. For more information, call the Town Office at 353-2561.

Poll workers,

moderator sought

Any Durham resident interested in working at the election polls on April 1 should come into the Town Office and speak with the staff. One should be in a political party or willing to enter a party.

Any interested, experienced adult who would like to act as moderator at the elections and annual town meeting in April should call 353-2561 for more information. The town’s previous moderator, Gary Wood, has retired but is willing to train and or guide the next person.

Applicants sought for Durham scholarship

The Durham Scholarship Committee will award one $1,000 scholarship this year. Scholarship applications and qualifications are available at the Durham Town Office or online at www.durhamme.com and must be completed and returned to the Town Office no later than March 11, at 4:30 p.m. The scholarship will be paid directly to the recipient after the successful completion of the first semester (minimum 2.5 GPA). The recipient, who must live in Durham, is limited to one scholarship award. The recipient must have applied and/or been accepted as an incoming freshman in an accredited academic, vocational, professional or technical school, college or university and must attend classes full time.

Applications will be reviewed and finalists chosen by the Durham Scholarship Committee. The scholarship award will be presented at the Durham town meeting on Saturday, April 2.

AMVETS, auxiliary membership

Veterans who want to belong to an organization that supports other veterans, families and the local are welcome to join the Durham AMVETS Post 13. For membership information, call Chad Burke, 798-0956.

Women who are the wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister or granddaughter (18 or older) of a veteran are invited to join the Durham AMVET Post 13 Ladies Auxiliary. Give Melinda a call or email her at amvetpost13la@gmail.com.
