CAPE ELIZABETH — The School Board has scheduled a special workshop Tuesday to discuss the district’s response to a visit from a former student that prompted a lockdown of the three-school campus.

The town’s elementary, middle and high schools, all located near Ocean House and Scott Dyer roads, were locked down briefly Wednesday morning after incidents that led to the former student’s arrest.

Afterward, the district’s emergency response team, including the police and fire chiefs, school superintendent and representatives from each building, met to scrutinize Wednesday’s events.

The team was expected to “pay special attention to weaknesses that were highlighted by the incident,” School Board Chairwoman Elizabeth Scifres said in an email sent Friday to parents and school employees.

The team is scheduled to report its findings to the board during a special workshop immediately following Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. school budget workshop in the high school library and learning commons.

“At that time, the board will ask questions and look to address concerns with our facilities, procedures and practices,” Scifres said.

On Wednesday, police arrested Nathaniel Lavallee, 25, and charged him with trespassing on school property. He was taken to the Cumberland County Jail and released after paying $200 cash bail, according to a jail intake worker.

Police told WCSH-TV that Lavallee first showed up at Pond Cove Elementary School and asked a teacher for money. The school reported the incident to police because Lavallee isn’t the parent or guardian of a student.

When police arrived, Lavallee had walked over to Cape Elizabeth High School. Police gave him a ride home and told him not to go back to the schools. Lavallee returned an hour later and tried to enter Cape Elizabeth Middle School, where he was taken into custody by police.

“The safety of our children is of paramount importance,” Scifres said in Friday’s email. “We have come through a difficult time together. We are fortunate the incident had a positive outcome, and must seize this opportunity to reflect and improve.”
