The Secretary of State’s Office said Monday that it hasn’t decided whether to invalidate seven nomination signatures collected by former Biddeford Mayor Joanne Twomey, who is a candidate for the Senate District 32 seat.

Spokeswoman Kristen Muszynski said a hearing was held Monday in Augusta on the signature challenge. The secretary of state now has five business days to settle the claim, which was filed by David Flood, a former Biddeford city councilor who lost the 2009 mayoral race to Twomey.

If the signatures are determined to be invalid, Twomey will not appear on the June 14 primary election ballot against fellow Democrat Susan Deschambault. Stephen Martin is the Republican candidate.

Muszynski said a special election will be held Tuesday to determine whether Deschambault or Martin will serve on an interim basis as the senator from District 32. The seat been vacant since Sen. David Dutremble resigned Jan. 28.

Voters will elect a senator to serve two years in the general election Nov. 8. Senate District 32 covers Biddeford, Alfred, Arundel, Dayton, Kennebunkport and Lyman.
