KENNEBUNPORT — A Kennebunkport man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for setting fire to his restaurant two years ago, the state fire marshal’s office announced Wednesday.

Karl Maine, 59, was sentenced Tuesday in York County Superior Court to a 16-year sentence, with all but eight years suspended and four years of probation. Maine had been convicted earlier this year of arson for setting fire to Jake’s Diner on Route 25 in Limington in February 2014.

Surveillance video from a neighboring store showed Maine leaving the restaurant, and smoke billowing from a rear storage room less than three minutes later. Fire investigators say Maine started the fire to get out of about $7,000 of debt from the business The building in which the restaurant was located was owned by Aaron Sleeper, and was destroyed. It had a value of $142,000.
