Re: “Educator who won $1 million denies stealing $14.99 blouse” (April 8):

Where are your news reporting priorities? Haven’t you noticed that Europe is burning with the flames of terrorism and an immigration crisis, health care in the U.S. is terminally ill and the American political system has fallen apart?

Yet you choose to report, on the front page, an alleged misdemeanor of a prominent educator (Nancie Atwell) who has brought not only honor to our state but also dedicated her life to encouraging young people in literary arts.

If, in fact, she is guilty, it reflects a momentary lapse in judgment and not systematic corruption and theft. Looking at the larger picture, corporations are inverting themselves and prominent leaders are diverting funds to shell corporations to avoid paying taxes. Multinational companies are sending jobs overseas to benefit from the near-slave labor market.

We know you have to sell newspapers, but do you have to do it at the expense of besmirching an honorable person’s reputation?
