She was born Oct. 9, 1919, in Breckyville, P.Q. Canada, one of 19 children, the youngest daughter of Pierre and Rosalie (Morin) Couture. She came to Sanford as a child, and was educated in Sanford schools. She became a U.S. citizen in 1943.
On Feb. 16, 1939, she married Andre H. Jacques in Holy Family Church in Sanford.
She had been employed for a few years at Pepperell Manufacturing Co. and Bruce Shoe Shop in Biddeford. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and a phenomenal grandmother and great-grandmother. In one word, she was an angel.
She was preceded in death by Andre, her husband of 59 years, on July 30, 1998.
Gertrude is survived by: two sons, Andre H. Jacques Jr. and his wife Marie of Florida (formerly of Dayton), and Robert D. Jacques, U.S. Navy (retired) of Florida; one daughter, Joan (Jacques) Turcotte and her husband Lawrence of Florida (formerly of Biddeford); five grandchildren, Celeste Turcotte- Fecteau and her husband Lucien of Biddeford, Nicole (Turcotte) Walton and her husband Carl of Wells, Hilary Jacques-Henry and her husband Jason of New Hampshire, Andre R. Jacques and his partner Mary McDonough of Massachusetts, and Michele Jacques-Mikutel and her husband Victor of Florida; five great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Jade, Andre (A.J.), Xavier, Laney and Liam; one brother, Raymond Couture, U.S. Navy (retired) and his wife June of Reading, Massachusetts; one brother-in-law, Lucien Jacques of Biddeford; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no visiting hours. Private services and burial in Oceanview Cemetery in Wells will be at a later date.
