PORTLAND — A Portland High School teacher has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.

Freeport resident Gerald White, 44, was sentenced last week to five years in jail with all but 90 days suspended. He remains free on bail until May 12 when he must report to the Cumberland County Jail. He must serve six years probation following his release, and will have to register as a sex offender.

White was arrested at at the school last December and was later released on bail. Police seized his computer the day before his arrest. The Computer Crimes Unit began investigating White after receiving a tip.

After examining the computer, police found dozens of images of child pornography. None of the images were believed to have been children from Maine, and police said last year they did not believe any students from the school were involved.

White, an art teacher, was placed on administrative leave by the school following his arrest.
