KITTERY POINT — Work to clean and restore the historic Wood Island Life Saving Station in Portsmouth Harbor may begin next week after officials recently awarded two contracts for the job.
The Portsmouth Herald reports Kittery officials and the Wood Island Life Saving Station Association awarded both contracts to Chesterfield Associates Inc., which signed them on Tuesday.
The town is paying Chesterfield $250,000 to remove hazardous materials from the site. The association awarded a $400,000 contract to begin phase I of exterior repairs to the structure.
The landmark building at the entrance of the Piscataqua River once served as a base for crews who rescued mariners in distress.
Wood Island Life Saving Station Association President Sam Reid says the station won’t be fully restored until the end of the summer.
