TOPSHAM — Fire departments from a dozen communities responded to a fire that raged through Monday night at a Pejepscot-area scrap metal recycling plant.
The Grimmel Industries fire was reported around 6 p.m. Monday, and the last firefighters left the scene around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, Topsham Fire Chief Brian Stockdale said Tuesday morning.
Besides Topsham, firefighters responded from Brunswick, Freeport, Lisbon, Bath, West Bath, North Yarmouth, Bowdoinham, Richmond, Woolwich, Litchfield, and Sabattus, Stockdale said.
It is unknown what caused the fire at the former paper mill along the Androscoggin River.
“We don’t feel it’s suspicious at all,” Stockdale noted. “We’re not sure what could have happened … and something just sparked.”
Several other fires have occurred at the property in the past two decades, according to the Bangor Daily News, including a 1995 arson blaze that caused more than $1 million in damage, and most recently a two-alarm fire in 2013.
