PORTLAND –  Michael Sylvester of Peaks Island won the Democratic primary Tuesday for the Maine House District 39 seat, defeating Andrew Edwards by a 645-226 vote.

Sylvester will now go on to face Republican Peter Doyle in the Nov. 8 general election. Doyle was unopposed in his party’s primary election.

Sylvester and Doyle are seeking to replace Democratic Rep. Diane Russell, who was unable to seek a fifth consecutive term because of state term limits and instead is seeking the nomination for the Maine Senate District 27 seat.

House District 39 encompasses the city’s East End and Casco Bay islands.
