I was very disturbed by an article in last Friday’s paper (“Greely pitcher sharp from start as Yarmouth comes up short,” Page D1) covering last Thursday’s playoff baseball game between Greely and Yarmouth high schools.
The article did a good job of recognizing outstanding individual efforts on both sides, while also highlighting errors made which led to the only runs being scored in a 2-0 game. This should have been good enough.
However, the article made a point of attributing the errors to two individuals. I am confident that the two fine young men mentioned will take away their own valuable lessons from their disappointing loss, but I don’t think that they, as high school student athletes, should have to learn how to cope with that loss in such a public manner.
