South Portland High School will host a preseason cross country race – the Paul Brogan Invitational – on Thursday, Aug. 25, and Coach Brogan himself will be in attendance.

Athletes from SPHS, Cape Elizabeth High School, Portland High School and Biddeford High School will all participate, and SPHS alumni are invited to run. All are welcome to spectate.

“Coach Brogan was a longtime history teacher and track coach at SPHS. He was the XC, indoor and outdoor boys head coach from [the 1969-70 school year] to Spring 2007,” said Dave Kahill, now the boys cross country and boys track head coach. “He was known for his infectiously positive attitude in the classroom and athletics, and his love of life, competition, and sportsmanship.”

The JV race, a 1.75-mile run, will begin at 5:30 p.m.; the varsity boys and alumni race, 2.7 miles, will begin at 6 p.m.; and the varsity girls and alumni race, also 2.7 miles, will begin at 6:30.
