Police say a man smashed a stolen car into a house in Yarmouth and ran off Friday night.

According to Yarmouth police Lt. Dean Perry, a Chevrolet SUV was stolen in Lewiston late Friday afternoon. It was later seen in Portland, where it nearly hit a patrol car.

Then, shortly after 8 p.m., it was seen in Yarmouth, where police gave chase, Perry said. It was a short chase, however, Perry said, because the driver of the SUV couldn’t negotiate a curve and went off the road, hitting the front of the house at 32 Main St.

Perry said the man ran off. Some blood was spotted on the SUV, he said, and police believe the man had some minor cuts and was running with a limp.

Perry said he was a white man wearing a white T-shirt.

Three police dogs were brought in to search for the man, Perry said, but they were unsuccessful and the active search was called off around 10:30 p.m. Perry said evidence technicians were examining the car late Friday night to try to find more evidence.
