I hear the same comments, daily, especially from many local food-related businesses: “We need help! Workers are hard to find these days. There’s a shortage of hires.”

My experience over the years has been to tap these areas of available workers: students, retirees and new arrivals/Americans.

Students are quick to learn and earn. Contact your local schools and universities. Retirees bring much experience to the table. Inquire at local organizations.

English-speaking immigrants and refugees are eager to support their families. Contact local agencies, churches, mosques and synagogues for referrals.

Look to your loyal customer base, too. Chances are that because they like visiting your business, they may enjoy being part of the effort.

Ask your employee(s). They’re already on board. They may very well know of someone who’d be a good fit. Be sure to reward them if you hire their recommendation. Motivated and rewarded employees feel appreciated and valued.

And yes, by word of mouth – a known referral is always helpful!
