At a workshop Monday, the South Portland City Council chose six candidates to interview for the vacant post of city manager.

The city received a total of 23 applications, according to Don Gerrish, the interim city manager, who is also a partner at Eaton Peabody Consulting, which is working with the council to find a replacement for Jim Gailey, who resigned earlier this year.

Gerrish presented the council with nine possible candidates prior to its meeting Monday and the governing body whittled that down to six, who are now scheduled to be interviewed across two days – Oct. 12 and 13.

At the end of those interviews, Gerrish expects the council to name two finalists to move forward in the hiring process.

The town of Cape Elizabeth is also looking for a new manager and it too has hired Gerrish and Eaton Peabody Consulting to assist in the search.

A public forum will be held in Cape Elizabeth at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Town Hall for residents to have input into the qualities they would like to see in a new manager. Anyone unable to attend that session can email their thoughts to RMetivier@eatonpeabody.com.
