Chipmunks, squirrels, groundhogs and their human admirers sincerely thank you for publishing Scarborough resident Benjamin Rupert’s letter headlined “Animals are worth risk of honking ticket” (Page A6, Sept. 28). Of course they’re worth it!

God created little critters and gave them, as He gave us, free will. If they tend to randomly cross roads, it’s up to us, the allegedly superior creations, to deal with it: i.e., sounding the horn to hustle them along, not smashing them into the pavement.

Albert Schweitzer had much to say about kindness to the little ones who share the planet. One of my favorites quotes is: “A man is ethical only when life, as such, is sacred to him, that of plants and animals as that of his fellow men, and when he devotes himself helpfully to all life that is in need of help.”

Therefore, in the jargon du jour, honk if you love animals.
