WINDHAM — Bonny Eagle prepared for a difficult challenge Friday night against a Windham team that reached the regional final a year ago and the state championship game in 2014.

“We had a couple trick plays we were working on,” said quarterback Cam Day, “but we didn’t end up pulling them out.”

No, the Scots did just fine with their regular package of read-option runs and play-action passes. They scored on every offensive possession in the first half, never punted and rolled to a 38-10 Class A victory to put a damper on Windham’s Senior Night celebration.

Bonny Eagle improved to 6-0. Windham is 3-3.

“It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be,” said Day, who ran for three touchdowns and threw for another. “We were driving. We had no let-ups. Everyone was hitting their holes and doing their assignments.”

Day carried 17 times for 135 yards, and scored on runs of 6, 8 and 24 yards. He also completed all six passes he attempted in the first half and finished 8 of 9 for 132 yards. That included a 31-yard touchdown reception by Keith Hoffses, who caught the pass near the line of scrimmage and slipped free from two would-be tacklers down the left sideline on the first play of the fourth quarter.

“We’re pretty happy with how our offense played tonight,” Bonny Eagle Coach Kevin Cooper said. “We were able to get a bunch of different players going in a lot of different ways.”

Indeed, Alex Sprague complemented Day’s running with 103 yards on 20 carries, including a 1-yard scoring plunge thanks to a second effort that made the score 18-7.

Cam Theberge had scored on a 6-yard run to make it 12-0 earlier in the second quarter and Day directed an efficient two-minute drill after taking over at midfield with just under three minutes remaining in the half. After nearly losing the ball when Sprague fumbled on a halfback pass attempt after being hit by Justin Labrecque of Windham, the Scots recovered the ball and drove 58 yards on four plays, the last an 8-yard run up the middle by Day for a 24-7 lead.

“Both Alex and Cam, they run very hard,” Cooper said. “They have good vision. They kind of slash when they run so it’s hard to get them lined up for a clean tackle.”

Tackles Zach Klein and Kirby Morrell, guards Matt Silverman and Jeremiah Sheehan, and center Parker Gammon continually opened holes for Bonny Eagle runners.

“We had some kids who I thought played very hard,” said Windham Coach Matt Perkins. “We have some guys who have never played D-line against (the read-option). When you’re unblocked, you’re not supposed to run upfield and I think we did all but once. The one time we didn’t, we made the play in the backfield. It’s a learning process.”

Windham quarterback Desmond Leslie completed 13 of 29 passes for 164 yards. Griffeth Hebert made a diving catch for an 18-yard touchdown early in the second quarter and Claudio Estrada’s PAT kick made it 12-7.

Estrada also kicked a 30-yard field goal on the final play of the half. Bonny Eagle’s only struggle came in the kicking game. The Scots were 0 of 4 on conversion kicks.

“We’re going to work on that in practice this week,” Day said. “But overall we did pretty good.
