In the past few days, 52 signs for the same political candidate sprouted up along the northbound half-mile stretch of Route 1 where it passes through Scarborough Marsh. This is both an assault on the eyes and a blight on one of Maine’s great natural treasures. To keep political biases out of it, I won’t mention the candidate.

Without a doubt, some of these signs violate the state law that they must be at least 30 feet apart. I’d like to suggest a solution to our legislators: No sign for the same candidate or referendum on one side of the road may be within sight of another.

This would strike a good balance between still allowing candidates to advertise themselves and minimizing overkill. The Department of Transportation wouldn’t need a yardstick to enforce the law. Or how about authorizing local public works to do instant enforcement as they go about their duties?
