OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Joseph Cooper has been hired as the town’s Public Works Director.

The town council voted 4-0, with Council Chairman Shawn O’Neill absent, to hire Cooper Tuesday night at an annual salary of $70,000.

Cooper will replace Marc Guimont, who was hired last year as interim public works director after previous public works director Bill Robertson retired.

Cooper, who lives in Saco, will begin the position on Nov. 28. He has worked for the City of Saco Public Works Department since 2006, and currently holds the position of engineering and GIS technician. Prior to his current position, Cooper was the utility supervisor in charge of storm water and sewer infrastructure and maintenance crews and was also the inspection technician for the tri-community utility inspection program.

He served in the United States Army for more than 20 years. Cooper serves as captain of the Saco Fire Department call force.

Town Manager Larry Mead said Cooper “came highly regarded by people who worked with him and people who worked for him.”

Cooper briefly addressed the town council.

“I’m excited to work for Old Orchard and with Old Orchard. I know most of the guys on the crew, I think we can work together and get things done,” he said. Cooper said he wanted to provide good customer service to the residents of Old Orchard Beach.
