Scarborough OKs zoning
for Mussey apartments
The Scarborough Town Council has approved a zone change that would allow the construction of more than 70 market rate apartments at an 11-acre site off Mussey Road.

At its meeting on Nov. 16, the council gave unanimous approval to the new zoning, which was requested by local developer Rocky Risbara. The project will now move to the Planning Board for site plan approval.

Under Risbara’s development proposal, the apartment complex would include both one- and two-bedroom units in six, three-story buildings. Councilors agreed last week that the project fills a need for more multifamily housing options in town.

“What these guys are trying to accomplish is more housing for the people that live in our town,” Councilor Kate St. Clair said, “and that area is a very up-and-coming neighborhood.”

And Councilor Shawn Babine said the “location is perfect given its proximity to the Maine Mall” and access to public transportation.

Risbara said the units are the same size and design as the ones his company built at the 146-unit Blue Spruce Farm subdivision in Westbrook.

The spectrum of residents living in those apartments ranges from 20- and 30-year-old millennials to residents in their 80s, he said.

Team Kyle group

wins $5,000 grant

The Team Kyle Foundation in Scarborough has won a $5,000 Better Neighbor Fund grant from Town & Country Federal Credit Union.

The Better Neighbor Fund was introduced in by the credit union six years ago in order to support the good work local charitable organizations carry out in the community. To date Town & Country has awarded $175,000 to 56 charitable initiatives

This year eight charitable organizations from an original finalist list of 25 nominees, were awarded a share of $25,000. The 25 finalists were nominated in September through the credit union’s Facebook page, and during the month of October, the public voted online for the project they thought was most deserving.

“The Better Neighbor Fund is an important part of Town & Country’s community outreach efforts. It provides local nonprofit organizations with a chance to secure much needed funding for important charitable initiatives and gives the public an opportunity to learn about the work these groups do in the community,” said David Libby, president and CEO of the credit union.

The online campaign garnered more than 11,000 votes, according to a press release.

The mission of the Team Kyle Foundation, named in memory of Scarborough’s Kyle St. Clair, is to pay it forward by offering various types of support for local children suffering from an illness or disability.

Eagle Scout’s benches
signs improve preserve

Jacob Murphy, an Eagle Scout from Scarborough, has created and installed two wooden benches and two way-finding signs at the Fuller Farm preserve on Broadturn Road.

The 220-acre Scarborough Land Trust property offers the town’s largest trail system and fronts on the Nonesuch River.
