AUGUSTA — The state is looking for volunteers to help keep an eye on a southern Maine shooting range.
The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is passing new safety rules addressing previous complaints of dangerous behavior at shooting ranges on land owned by the state. The state’s rules address hours of operations, minimum age limits and the use of range safety officers.
Maine is looking for volunteers to monitor a shooting range at the Major Gregory Sanborn Wildlife Management Area in Fryeburg.
Volunteers must have previous firearms experience, have or be willing to obtain training as a range safety officer and also submit to a background check.
The state may cover the costs of a National Rifle Association training course for range safety officers.
