As a family physician caring for vulnerable patients in Maine, I am against the nomination of U.S. Rep. Tom Price, M.D., as head of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Price has consistently been against those programs that ensure that the neediest among us get safe and reliable care. He has voted against the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which provides coverage to so many kids in our state. He wants to make changes to the Medicaid system that could further destabilize MaineCare, and he has been in favor of privatizing Medicare, which would put our elders at risk of losing reliable access to health care.

Even with more people insured today with Obamacare than when I first moved to Maine 10 years ago, I still see so many people struggling every day with no insurance or inadequate insurance because Maine did not expand Medicaid. It will only get worse with Dr. Price in charge of the federal DHHS.

There are many physicians who aren’t in favor of this nomination, and we stand together to denounce President-elect Donald Trump’s choice.
