The Cape Elizabeth Town Council unanimously appointed Matt Sturgis, the town’s tax assessor, to be the new town manager on Wednesday night.
The council voted 7-0 to give Sturgis a three-year contract with a starting annual salary of $110,000, said council Chairman Jamie Garvin.
Sturgis, who has worked for the town for 16 years, will replace Mike McGovern, who retired at the end of December after nearly four decades on the job. His annual salary was $123,000.
Sturgis, 48, lives in Gray and is chairman of the Gray Town Council. He submitted his resignation to the Gray council Tuesday night, effective at the end of this month. Sturgis also is tax assessor in neighboring Scarborough, a position he will leave, as well.
Sturgis is scheduled to assume his duties and be sworn in as town manager on Jan. 30.
