Following President Trump and Gov. LePage, Peter Longley’s Jan. 26 letter attacks Rep. John Lewis in terms (“corrupt and destructive”; “blowhard”) that are absurd to anyone who knows his career of nonviolent civil rights advocacy and his dedicated service to his country in Congress.
I served with John Lewis for 12 years in Congress. John Lewis is a friend of mine.
More important, I believe he is the only sitting U.S. representative of whom it can be said that he is revered by members on both sides of the aisle. His protest against President Trump in a free country does not warrant the condemnation he has received.
