OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Philip Edwin Townsend, 81, of Old Orchard Beach, passed away at home on Saturday July, 29, 2017, while surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Westbrook, on Nov. 7, 1935, a son of Francis and Florida (Whitzell) Townsend.

Philip proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps.

Earlier, he was employed by Pepperell Manufacturing, Maremont Corporation and Gerard Construction. He later was employed by Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and owned and operated Townsend Construction and Excavating in Old Orchard Beach.

He was an avid outdoorsman with an endless love for fishing, hunting and camping. He also enjoyed woodworking taking great pride in his work.

He was preceded in death by: his son Bruce Townsend, his daughter Susan Townsend and several brothers and sisters.

He is survived by: his wife of 64 years, Barbara (Hilton) Townsend, his four children Denise Coutu and her husband Pete, Philip Townsend II and his wife Lisa, Richard Townsend and his wife Deb and Lyn Gervais and her husband Mark. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, eight great- grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and many adopted grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Visiting Hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, with a Funeral Service at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Cote Funeral Home Chapel, 87 James St., Saco. Burial will be at a later date in Scarborough Memorial Cemetery.
