The Staples store on Route 1 in Falmouth was evacuated and closed because of a bomb threat Saturday afternoon.

Falmouth police Sgt. George Savage said the threat was called into the store directly. An employee answered the phone and reported it at 3:19 p.m., he said. The threat was generic, with no reason or affiliation given.

“We’re getting it secondhand,” Savage said of the threat. “It wasn’t like a message that we could listen to.”

Portland police sent a canine unit and the bomb dog searched the building. The all-clear was given and Staples was cleared to reopen, but it remained closed for the rest of the day, Savage said.

The Lamey Wellehan and Rainbow Toys, on either side of Staples, were also swept with the canine unit, but nothing was found.

Savage said the investigation is continuing.
