FARMINGTON (AP) — A Maine man who police say killed his girlfriend while she slept at their home has been indicted on a murder charge.

Fifty-seven-year-old James “Ted” Sweeney turned himself in on July 11, submitting a handwritten note that stated “I’m going to jail ’cause I hurt my girlfriend.”

He was indicted by a Franklin County grand jury Thursday.

Police say they found 51-year-old Wendy Douglass dead from head trauma and covered with a blanket.

Officers discovered her body after they were asked by Sweeney to check on her.

Sweeney is currently being held without bail in Farmington. He is represented by defense attorney Walter Hanstein.
