I am writing in response to the recent article on the shortage of nurses in Maine (Aug. 27).
I recently retired after 41 years of nursing, mostly at Maine Medical Center.
Until hospitals and patient care health facilities increase their pay, offer better benefits and work toward tolerable working conditions, there will always be a shortage of nurses. They are losing many high-quality nurses to jobs that don’t involve patient care.
