Maine lost a hero Nov. 4. Robert Coles of Machias, retired Navy chief petty officer, passed away.
He was known to many, having appeared at many schools in uniform to recount his participation in Pearl Harbor. He was very proud to have been able to represent the great state of Maine at the 75th anniversary celebration in Hawaii. He was given a hero’s sendoff, with motorcade from his home to the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, and treated like a movie star, which he deserved.
Bob was an original: straightforward, patriotic and unselfish. It was an honor to get to know him.
I hope your readers will pause and remember a Down East boy who served his country. A quiet salute would be in order.
