SCARBOROUGH — In the regular season matchup between Scarborough and Thornton Academy, the Red Storm let a 14-point lead slip away as the Golden Trojans earned the win.

In Friday night’s Class A South regional championship game, the No. 1 Red Storm would once again jump out to a big lead — but this time they would leave no doubt as they cruised to a 49-7 win over TA and clinched a spot in next week’s state final.

It didn’t take long for the Red Storm to take control as on the third play of the game Jarett Flaker took a handoff and raced 73 yards for a touchdown. Liam McDonnell nailed the extra point to make it 7-0 just 1:34 into the game.

That would be the only score of the opening quarter, but the Red Storm poured it on in the second period.

On the first play of the second quarter, senior running back Owen Garrard broke off a 35-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0.

After a short Thornton Academy punt, the Red Storm drove 50 yards in seven plays to make it 21-0. Cody Dudley finished off the scoring drive with a 13-yard TD run with 6:03 left in the half.

The next TA drive would end with Scarborough recovering a fumble at the Trojans’ 48. Scarborough took a four-touchdown lead into the half thanks to a 17-yard touchdown run from Flaker. McDonnell nailed his fourth extra point to make it 28-0 at the break.

The Red Storm, who ran for 264 yards in the first half, would quickly make it 35-0 — and this time it started with the Scarborough defense.

Senior Jaquan Seme picked off a TA pass and returned it more than 40 yards down to the 4-yard line. On the very next play, Dudley sprinted into the end zone to make it a five-score game — and the clock would start to run.

TA would be forced to punt on its next drive, and unfortunately for the Trojans the kick would go just a few yards to give Scarborough the ball at the TA 24.

Senior QB Zoltan Panyi scored on a 24-yard run on the first play of the ensuing drive to make it 42-0.

The Red Storm would go up 49-0 when Jeremy Sendrowski scored on a 1-yard run.

Thornton finally cracked the scoreboard with a 5-yard TD run from Grant Dow with just 1:27 left in regulation.

The Red Storm were able to just run out the clock from there and celebrated their first ever Class A South championship. Scarborough will face Class A North champion Windham in next week’s state title game at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

Thornton Academy finishes the season with an 8-2 record.
