THE OWNERS OF SOUTHGATE RESTAURANT will reopen their establishment at a new location at 25 Centre St. in Bath.

BATH

After a fire destroyed the Southgate Restaurant in September, the popular Bath eatery will reopen at a new location on Centre Street.

“We’ve always dreamed of owning a place, so even though a terrible thing happened, we obviously wanted to keep our dream going,” said Karl Schaumburg, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Mindy. “We enjoy being able to serve the community of Bath and we didn’t want to stop.”

Damage from the fire left the previous space unusable, so the Schaumburgs decided to find another location.

“We didn’t own the other place, and it just was pretty difficult for us to go back there as far as timing goes,” said Schaumburg. “So we decided to move.”

The new spot is smaller than the prior location on Washington Street. The Schaumburgs said they are working out the logistics of the new space. Although it’s no longer located by Bath Iron Works’ South Gate, the name won’t change.

“We’re definitely going to keep the name the same,” he said.

After the fire, other area restaurants pitched in with fundraisers to provide support for the workers of Southgate, who were left jobless and without income. Schaumburg said he plans to hire back many if not all of those workers who he had to let go.

“It is our intention to take back as many as we possibly can,” he said.

While there’s no set date for when the restaurant will be ready to reopen, Schaumburg was optimistic that it could happen as early as March or April.
