A North Berwick man was arrested following a 12-mile police chase through Waterboro at speeds of up to 100 mph Saturday night, the York County sheriff said.

Kyle Berounsky, 29, was charged with eluding a police officer and burglary, according to Sheriff William King.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home on Kennedy Drive in Waterboro for a possible burglary at 9:15 p.m. Saturday by a woman who was watching the home for her vacationing brother.

The rear door had been forced open, King said, and the homeowner suspected that a former roommate, Berounsky, might have been squatting in the house while he was on vacation, police said.

Waterboro contract deputy Kevin Collins sent out an alert and Wells police reported they had stopped Berounsky earlier. A Wells canine unit helped in a search of the area.

Meanwhile, Sheriff’s Deputy Cody Frazier stopped a vehicle on Main Street in Waterboro for having a plate light out and following another vehicle too closely. The driver fled when Frazier questioned him.

The driver, later determined to be Berounsky, led Frazier on a chase onto Old Alfred Road and Route 5. A spike strip erected by police near Merrill’s Country Store did not deter Berounsky, who continued to drive the vehicle with Frazier and two other officers in pursuit, according to King.

Berounsky turned onto Enterprise Drive and proceeded into Leisure Lane, where he stopped and ran into the home of a friend. The Wells police dog tracked Berounsky to the second floor of the home, and he was taken into custody.

Police said a pry bar was found in Berounsky’s vehicle and may have been used to force open the door of the home on Kennedy Drive.

Berounsky was being held Sunday on $5,000 bail at the York County Jail pending video arraignment scheduled for Monday at Springvale District Court.
