BIDDEFORD — Following a lengthy nationwide search, the University of New England has announced that a veteran college administrator and scientist will be joining the school as provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs in April.

Dr. Joshua Hamilton is currently serving at Rhode Island College as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs; he will assume his duties at UNE on April 15.

Hamilton is an accomplished author, penning more than 80 published research articles, along with more than 90 published abstracts, and almost a dozen book chapters, reviews, and reports. He holds several patents and has served as principal investigator for numerous projects ranging from gene expression to toxicology to clinical trials.

During his career, he has been an advisor to 10 doctoral graduates, dozens of undergraduate researchers, and has been the recipient of many awards and honors for both research and teaching.

Before joining Rhode Island College in July 2017, Hamilton was dean of the Swenson College of Science and Engineering and a professor of biology at the University of Minnesota at Duluth.

He has strong ties to the New England area, formerly serving as the chief academic and scientific officer at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, from 2008 to 2013. Hamilton also was senior scientist and had a joint faculty appointment at Brown University.

From 1990 to 2008, Hamilton was a faculty member at Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire, and he held a concurrent professorship in pathology and laboratory medicine at Brown University. He was the founding director of the Center for Environmental Health Sciences and associate director of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, where he was awarded a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellowship to support his research training.

He was awarded a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellowship to support his research training at Dartmouth College and the Norris Cotton Cancer Center.

“I have full confidence that incoming Provost Hamilton will be a tremendous asset to UNE through the pursuit of innovative ideas and strategies that will enhance the university’s stature as a national leader in higher education,” said Dr. James Hebert, UNE president. “His impressive record of accomplishments as an administrator, researcher, mentor, and teacher will serve the UNE community well. He will bring a wealth of experience and a rich perspective to the important work of our strategic planning process and will undoubtedly enhance the academic experience at UNE for our students.”

Hamilton said he was proud to accept the position with UNE.

“I am humbled by this appointment and eagerly anticipate being a part of the vitality of UNE,” he said. “I’ve been intrigued by this institution for several years, and the prospect of helping to write the next chapter of discovery and innovation in UNE’s history under President Herbert’s new leadership and vision will be a true honor.”
