The 10,000-square-foot building at 382 Goodwins Mills Road was last used as a school in 2007, and was acquired by the town in 2008.
Residents in November voted to allow the town to borrow up to $1.6 million and allocate up to $208,000 of reserve funds to renovate the former school. This vote canceled out prior votes with a lower price tag.
Residents in 2016 voted to allow the town to sell the current town hall property at 11 South Waterboro Road and use the proceeds to decrease the debt from the renovation bond.
Proponents of the project say the current town hall is cramped and the property at South Waterboro Road is inadequate for the expansion needed for the building to continue to serve the town in the future.
The town has hired structural engineering and architectural firm Harriman Associates to do preliminary work on the Cousens School project, and architect Christopher Carroll has provided the Select Board regular updates over the past few months.
The town put out a request for bids in early February on a renovation project for the building and is accepting them through March 14.
“The plan includes but is not limited to town offices, community rooms, kitchen, bathrooms, entrance canopies, and elevator. The renovation also includes new associated mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and septic systems. Site work includes but is not limited to new storm water drainage and expanded paved parking areas,” states the bid request, which is posted on the town’s website.
