PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Ryan Fredette of Winslow capped an undefeated season by winning the 182-pound division Saturday at the New England high school wrestling championships.
Fredette, a four-time state champion, earned the title by recording pins in the semifinals and finals after winning his first two matches by decision.
In the championship match, he pinned Tommy Wrzesien of Rhode Island’s Chariho High School at 4:22.
Fredette, a New England runner-up in 2017, was the only champion from Maine, but four other Mainers placed in the top five.
Sam Anderson of Sanford reached the final in the 170-pound division before losing 9-0 to Paul Call of Southington, Connecticut. Jake Craig (106) of Skowhegan and Jakob Peavey of Erskine Academy (285) each finished third, and Josh Cote of Noble placed fifth at 120.
It’s the third straight year that Maine has had at least one New England champion. Bradley Beaulieu (138) of Marshwood and Cody Craig (106) of Skowhegan won their divisions in 2017, and Peter Del Gallo of Gardiner took the 120-pound title in 2016. Del Gallo also won at 106 pounds in 2013.
