Atlantic Federal Credit Union has been named one of the “healthiest” credit unions in the country by Deposit Accounts.com, a bank account comparison website. Atlantic placed in the top 2 percent of all federally insured credit unions in America with a grade of A+. Atlantic was reviewed on a number of factors, including capitalization, deposit growth and loan-to-reserve ratios.

Karyn MacNeill, director of Yarmouth Community Services, was named the 2018 William V. Haskell “Distinguished Professional of the Year” by the Maine Recreation and Park Association. MacNeill, who has been with the town of Yarmouth since 2013, previously worked for the city of Bath and is a certified parks & rec professional.

Junior Achievement of Maine received a Peak Performance Award from National Partner Junior Achievement USA and was also named a 5 Star Office for the second consecutive year. It was one of only 12 offices that received both a 5 Star award and the Peak Performance Award of the 109 offices eligible.

Visit Portland, the official tourism site for the Greater Portland region, presented Casco Bay Lines with a Beacon Award at its annual meeting April 9. The award is given to a member that is an icon in the Greater Portland area.

CHANS Home Health & Hospice in Mid-Coast recently received a 4-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, based on data collected in a nationally standardized survey.

The Maine Public Relations Council announced that Meg Handlin of Broadreach Public Relations in Portland has been accredited in public relations.

John D. Doughty, of Falmouth, has been chosen to join the prestigious Economic Club of New York. Doughty is a vice president and portfolio manager at R. M. Davis wealth management firm and the only member to live and work in Maine.

Cumberland physician Romeo Lucas was the Legislature’s doctor of the day on April 9.

News from nonprofits

The Rotary Club of South Portland/Cape Elizabeth has donated a total of $1,750 to Cape’s Thomas Memorial Library and the South Portland’s Public Library for youth literacy programs.

Buddy Up Animal Society and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine, both in Portland, received $5,000 grants from Bangor Savings Bank Foundation’s 2018 Community Matters More program. Community Financial Literacy of Portland and Freeport Community Services each received $1,000 grants.

The Maine Chapter of the New England PGA Golf Foundation presented the Travis Mills Foundation a check for $1,000 at the chapter’s annual meeting April 17 at The Woodlands Club in Falmouth. The donation will allow a veteran and their family to stay at a Foundation retreat for a week.

Hires, promotions, appointments

Brandon Mazer joined Portland firm Perkins Thompson as an associate attorney with a focus on the craft beverage practice. Mazer previously served as general counsel for Shipyard Brewing Company and is past president of the Maine Brewers’ Guild.

Bigelow Investment Advisors of Portland announced that Donna M. Ewert, of Brunswick, has joined its team as vice president and senior advisor.

Doctors Brady Mullin and Michael Mason have joined Mid Coast Medical Group-Surgical Care and the medical staff of Mid Coast Hospital.

Kimberly Frost recently joined the administrative team at Gawron Turgeon Architects in Scarborough.

Yarmouth’s Mary Jennings, MD, has been elected the new chief of pediatrics at InterMed, the state’s largest physician-owned primary care practice. .

Midcoast Federal Credit Union welcomed Kelly Jacobson as assistant branch manager at the Brunswick offices.

Milestones

An April 10 gala at the Ocean Gateway in Portland kicked off a year-long celebration for Gary’s House in recognition of its 20th anniversary. Gary’s House, which is operated by Mercy Hospital, provides a home away from home for families with hospitalized loved ones in the greater Portland area. The Gourmet Gala raised funds to support more than 400 families a year.

The Varney Agency announced key hirings and a new division to the insurance business. Varney & Company Benefits Advisors will launch with new employees Scott Smith, Glenn Tulloch and Rick Morrone, who will help employers navigate employee benefits.

Yarmouth Boat Yard, which has been in business since 1948, has added Seaway Boats to its line-up of product offerings. Seaway hand-builds 11 models of Downeast-style boats.

The Age-Friendly Portland Steering Committee has launched a new voluntary program to help local business owners become more sensitive to the needs of older customers and receive recognition for their efforts. The Merchant Company at 656 Congress St., is the first to be inspected and deemed eligible. The application contains criteria that can earn a business points in different categories of age-friendliness, including accessibility and customer service.

Southern Maine Chapter of the American Red Cross honored its Real Heroes on April 19: Stewart Graham, of Portland, Lifesaver Award; Lynn Wight, who accepted the Blood Services award on behalf of Michael Bourque, of Portland; Scarborough Police Chief Robert Moulton, Community Impact Award for Operation HOPE; Dan Martins, Service to the Armed Forces, for VA Maine Homeless Program at the Portland VA Clinic; Andrea Collin Reigosa, of Kennebunk, Community Service Award; and Paige Roberts, of Portland, Lifesaver Award.
