I totally agreed with every word of the Portland Press Herald’s May 4 editorial, “Our View: Faulty marijuana claims no help to policymakers” (Page A8) – until I came to the first line of the last paragraph, which among other things asserts that factors such as poverty play a much bigger role in addiction than any individual substance.

In an editorial criticizing misinformation around drug policy arguments, the above claim is dangerously inaccurate. Heroin, any synthetic form thereof and good old garden-variety alcohol are no respectors of tax brackets. The seven-figure-per-year hedge fund manager is just as at risk of addiction to these substances as the poorest public housing project resident. Sometimes, it is all about the pharmacology.
