CLAREMONT, Calif.
The Bowdoin College men’s tennis team sprinted to an early lead in doubles action and cruised to a 5-0 win over Washington (Mo.) University in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Championship on Monday afternoon at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College.
With the win, the Polar Bears (22-1) established a program record for single-season wins and advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the third consecutive season.
Bowdoin will face the University of Chicago at 2 p.m. ET today for a trip to the national championship match.
The Polar Bears took control of the match early, taking the first two completed doubles matches via 8-4 wins at No. 1 from Luke Tercek/Grant Urken and No. 2 from Jerry Jiang/Kyle Wolfe.
J.J. Kroot/Johnny Wu of WashU mounted a late rally at No. 3 doubles, closing the gap to 7-6, but Gil Roddy held serve for the win, giving he and his teammate Larry Zhao an 8-6 triumph and 3-0 overall lead heading to singles.
Roddy made quick work at No. 5 singles, dusting off Jason Haugen in a 6-2, 6-1 decision. It became a race to the finish from there as Urken, Wolfe and Justin Patel all reached the edge of wins within moments of each other for the Polar Bears. Patel got there first, rallying from a 0-6 opening set to defeat Kroot 6-2, 6-4, over the final two sets to clinch the victory for Bowdoin.

Four Bowdoin athletes have qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
Senior John Pietro (shot put, hammer), junior Joseph Staudt (110- meter hurdles), junior Sara Ory (400 hurdles) and sophomore Caroline Shipley (1,500) have all earned trips to the championship which will commence on Thursday.

Bowdoin College has announced the additions of Jonathan Michaeles and Kyle McAllister to the coaching staff.
The duo joins the staff to fill vacancies following the departure of Chris Sapp (University of Rochester) and Matt Leotti (Tufts University) this spring.
Michaeles joins Bowdoin following 14 years at Colby College, including the last six as head coach of the Mules. Michaeles had been the offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, academic advisor, and strength and conditioning director during his eight years as an assistant before moving up to the head coaching job in 2012, where he led Colby to 14 wins, including a 4-4 season in 2013.
A 1992 graduate of Bates College, Michales was the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Saint Anselm College from 1999 to 2004. He was also the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Fordham University during the 1998-99 academic year and was tight ends coach at the University of Pennsylvania in 1997-98. He started his collegiate coaching career at Allegheny College as the wide receiver, tight end, and kickers coach from 1994 to 1997. Michaeles will serve as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the Polar Bears.
McAllister comes to Bowdoin after a stint as recruiting coordinator, special teams coordinator and defensive line coach at Tufts University.
A 2010 Bates graduate, McAllister was a two-time All-NESCAC selection at safety and was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.
